A sure sign of addiction

I've been watching Fringe on Netflix. I mostly blame Tamara for this, because for ages she's been talking about Other Olivia's amazing bangs, and how beautiful Peter is, whom I still refer to as Pacey. He will always be Pacey.

Yesterday I got to an episode in the other universe where all the sheep had died out, and my first thought was, "That's so sad. What do they knit with?"

S.O.S.

Which I guess in this case stands for save our stash?

I stumbled upon a lovely new (to me) blog full of lovely knitted things, among other bits of gorgeous, and now all I want to do is knit lots of pretty cardigans.

Why does this only happen to me when it's way too hot in my apartment to knit? Months of lackluster knitting enthusiasm, and suddenly when it's 90 degrees out and my prime stitching spot is in direct sunlight, that's when I get motivated?

Brain. What are you doing?

Knitting explosion

My Mama has expressed displeasure at the fact that it's been over a month since I posted. And even longer since I posted pictures. Of anything other than my little Christmas tree, which she got to see in person anyway.

And so it's time for a knitting update! Huzzah!

Up first (these are in no particular order) is my Citron shawl:

It's knit in incredibly fine, soft yarn that's a blend of silk and mohair. It's very light, but still really warm. Not that I'm speaking from real experience. I haven't worn it yet. I love it, but it's not the sort of scarf I'd normally wear, and I haven't been able to figure out what to wear it with. But I will. It's too lovely to waste.

Then there are my mittens, which unlike the shawl, I have worn almost daily since I finished them.

They're a merino-cashmere blend, so they're warm and comfy, and I love them. I showed them to my coworker, and he called me the knitting sensei. I didn't argue, because they are easily the most complicated think I've knit yet. Lots of cables, and bobbles, and slipped stitches, and I had to modify it a bit to make them fit right. But they're fantastic.

And my thermis cowl:

I'm in love with the buttons. That's all I have to say.

And finally, my favorite thing I've knit recently:

The keys under those tiny sweaters look almost exactly alike. So I fixed that. Don't you wish all your keys had tiny sweaters?

Ok, Mama. I hope you're happy now. Maybe soon I'll finish the shawl I'm currently working on (and in love with), and you can see that, too.

It's done

It's not exactly a novel, but it's done.

Yay me! I have time to knit again!

Cue the knitwear

It's snowing tonight in Santa Fe.

It probably won't stick, and there probably won't be enough for even a late start at work tomorrow, but I'm still happy.

I'm going to wear my Hermione hat tomorrow.

Adventures with livestock

I am a bad blogger. It has been an entire month since I last posted here. Shame on me. Shame!

Plus, I've been busy doing awesome things, so you'd think I'd want to post about all the awesomeness.

My life is getting ridiculous again. I'm loving it.

Par example: Last weekend we went to the Taos Sheep and Wool Festival. I got a big bag of yarn and stuff, and a tiny sunburn on just one shoulder. I'm not sure how I managed that. I think I must have been somehow facing the same way all day.

The festival was so much fun though. I met other another knitter from Santa Fe, and her daughter and granddaughter from Phoenix.

And we saw a whole passel of knitting-friendly livestock. First there were the traditional sheep:

That one in the middle refused to come out of the middle. He was trying so hard to hide the indignity of being the only one that was shorn. It certainly wasn't because he was cold. It was at least seventy-five that day. Maybe eighty. Unseasonably warm for Taos.

Next we saw the alpacas.

They were very shy and stayed huddled in the middle so you couldn't really pet them much. The Boy Creature managed it, and said they were very soft. I'll have to console myself with petting the hand-dyed alpaca yarn I bought instead.

I did love the sound they made, though. It's sort of somewhere between a cat's meow and a sheep's bleat. And they did it over and over. I loved it!

This next little guy is a baby yak.

And when I say little, I mean about the size of a labrador. He was adorable, though. It was too hot for him, so he mostly just laid around and panted, poor little thing.

Last but certainly not least, were the angora bunnies. I'm crazy about these things, to the point that I considered getting one before we got Bagheera.

These are some of the most ridiculous-looking animals I've ever seen. They look like a normal bunny got put in the dryer and they puffed up into these giant dandelion type things. And they're huge. I'd seen pictures of them on the internet, and I thought they were the size of normal bunnies. But they're two to three times that size! And now I'm glad I didn't get one, because you pretty much have to be endlessly combing that fur. And there's a lot of fur.

It was a super fun day. I almost wish they had one every month. But not really, because I'd go so very broke buying yarn, and I'd never knit it all up. I already have too much as it is. But that's the way I like it.

And the other thing that's making my life more ridiculous: I signed up for trapeze classes again. I'm so excited! I will soon have super cool bruises again! That'll make wearing skirts to work interesting, once we get to doing ankle hangs.

Yarn indecision

Have I mentioned that things are nuts lately?

Things are still nuts.

In actual news, here's one of the few things I managed to get accomplished recently:

Those are my strangler fig socks, finished on Sunday morning. I finished them, wove in the ends, put them on to take this picture, and then didn't take them off again. Yay!

I mean, I've taken them off since then, but I wore them all day Sunday. They're pretty darn comfy.

And then it took me forever to figure out what to cast on next. I can't decide if it helps or hinders that process, know that of the forty-seven items in my queue on Ravelry, I already have the yarn needed for twenty-six of them. I could walk into the room where my yarn lives and cast on twenty-six things, given enough needles, and I wouldn't need to buy yarn until they were all done. Crazy.

This knitting thing. It really seems to have caught on with me, huh?

I finally just started a thread on Ravelry and said, "Go people! Vote!" And they voted, and I cast on a grumpasaurus!

However, he'll only take me a few days to knit, so in a few days or so, I'll have to do the whole song and dance all over again.

Knitting as fast as my sleepy fingers will go

May I just say what an exciting week it's been, knitting-wise.

And may I also say, I just read that sentence to myself, and realized how insane we knitters must sound to the muggles.

Whatever.

I finished the knitting part of my sweater!

Don't be fooled: those buttons only look like they've been sewn on. I haven't touched it since I bound off the last stitch. I will. Because I really like this sweater, and I really want to wear it. But I haven't got the energy for weaving in ends right now.

And yet, there is lace.

I've started my first lace shawl. I realize, again, that it doesn't look like much yet, but it's coming along nicely, and I'm excited for it to be finished. Which I suspect won't take long. I started that on Monday, and did most of that work in a few hours each day after. This temp job I'm working right now is another one of those that's paying me to sit by the phone, and it's spring break, so it's been incredibly slow. Slower than the day when we had record-breaking snowfall, according to the guy in the cubicle next to me.

So the lace is coming along surprisingly quickly. Incidentally, I'm also two hundred pages into the book I started yesterday morning. I halfway expect to have it finished by the time I do the booklove post this weekend. It's been an interesting week. At least the lace is keeping me awake. Daylight savings sucks.

I like inverted roller coasters best, FYI

Holy cow, what a week. And what a day. This week is seriously turning into a roller coaster. Monday and Tuesday crawled by so slowly I couldn't believe it, like that part at the beginning when you're going up the first big hill, which always feels so much longer than it actually is. Then this morning I get a call literally minutes after my alarm went off asking if I could make it to an office as soon as possible. And then all sorts of other things happened today, and they're not all definite yet, I think, so I don't wanna jinx it. So more details on that later.

But this means that no knitting happened today. And actually, not a whole lot of knitting has happened the rest of the week. What little I did do was good, though. I tried a new technique to fix the neck of my sweater, which is so close to being done I can taste it! All I have left to actually knit is the buttonhole band. Then I'll just have to weave in all the ends and sew on buttons and it's officially a sweater! I'm so excited!

Too bad I won't have much time for knitting for the rest of this week. Holy pancakes, Batman.

Reporting from the depths of stockinette hell

I am still being a monogamous knitter! It's astounding. I can't remember the last time I had only one project on the needles for this long. Thank god I'm nearing the end of this one project.

My sweater is nearly done! I finished one sleeve a couple of days ago, and the second sleeve just has a couple of inches to go. And I already have the buttons picked out (I think. I'm mostly sure), so it'll just need a button band, and all the ends woven in, and then it's a sweater! I'm so close!

And my next project will be a fancy lace shawl, because after all this stockinette stitch, I'm just about ready to kill myself with the boredom.

Knitting with the Doctor

It has been a long, long day, filled with a little bit of actually getting things done, some tasty cooking, recipe courtesy of the Pioneer Woman, and lots and lots of knitting while watching Doctor Who.

It was finally back in at the library yesterday. Which is why I didn't get nearly as much done today as I should have. One day later, I'm down three discs.

But I did get a lot of my sweater done. I'm through all the raglan decreases, so I've just got the ribbing at the neck, the sleeves and the button bands. Which means I could actually have a finished sweater in a few days' time. How sweet is that? Finally.

And then I can cast on something else! Yay!

February 17, 2010

Slacker. That's me.

I am aware of the fact that I've let two weekends go by now without doing a booklove post. I'm trying not to feel too guilty about that. They just didn't happen. Sorry. I'm a work in progress.

I am still reading. I'm still knitting, too.

Still knitting on my sweater.

And getting distracted and knitting other stuff instead.

And not finishing those things, or taking pictures of them.

It's been almost a week now since I finished knitting the Pop tart ipod cozy, but I haven't sewn it together, or even thought about beads, or whatever. I'll get there.

I did do this, though:

It's my very first washcloth. It's got a skull on it. Yay.

I never had any interest in knitting a washcloth, or a dishcloth, or anything like it, but I did a journal swap last summer, and my swap partner sent me that yarn. I didn't know what else to do with it, so I made that. I've used it twice. And I kinda like it. I've got about half the ball left, though.

I'm gonna knit this baby right here next. In honor of my burgeoning David Tennant obsession. Yay.

February 10, 2010

Crawling ever onwards

And that title works on many levels, let me tell you.

Firstly, knitting.

'Member that sweater from last week? That I said was actually not that far from being done? 'Member? I tried that sweater on. That sweater was never, ever going to close over my boobs. I even momentarily considered knitting the button band extra wide, in the way that knitters consider these ridiculous notions in order to try to avoid frogging things. I considered it for about half a second.

I have frogged that sweater.

And cast on in the next size up. *Sigh.* Such is a knitter's lot in life. Often an uphill battle. But at least our uniforms come with hand-knit socks.

In happier news, Mom was here this weekend, and I asked about buttons, and she immediately dug out four big containers of buttons, and we manically sorted through a slew of pearl buttons, and I found buttons that I think I like enough to use. I found others that I like even better, but one set is, I think, too small, and the other set doesn't have enough. But still, progress has been made on the button front.

I also cast on for one of these babies right here. Mine will look awfully similar to the one on her blog, except I think Mom stole all my beads after I moved out, plus, sewing on teensy bugle beads sounds exhausting right now. So mine might be sans sprinkles. At least for the time being. We'll see how I feel once it's all knit up. It's not so far along right now, because I only cast on, and it's been a long couple of days.

Because I have a job (temporarily. I'm told that's what happens when you work for a temp agency). Which normally would not be so bad, but the job that was supposedly in north Fort Worth, is actually so far north of Fort Worth that it's no longer in Tarrant county. So the commute sucks pretty badly. But it's only two weeks, and otherwise, it's been good. So I'm trying not to complain. Plus, there's a 70% chance of snow tonight, so I might not even have to go tomorrow. Which would be nice, except for that whole getting paid thing. Which is the other reason I'm not complaining about the job. I like that part. I'd hate to miss a whole day of it. So, all pros and cons taken into consideration,

In other areas of making myself crawl towards something resembling progress, my brain has been bubbling again, and I've been taking those bubblings more and more seriously. There are exciting things beginning to take shape. And they'll do so even more once I start getting a paycheck or two. Yay for start-up capital. That's a hint, right there. But things are still pretty loose right now, so I'm not giving any more away. I'll just say that I'm feeling more and more excited about these things I'm working on.

Ok, I'm going to go knit now.

A momentous occasion

Image source: this fantastic bakery, makers of some crazy-gorgeous baked goods. I especially love the Chanel-inspired cupcakes.

Happy 100th post, everybody! I'm celebrating with a new header photo. Like it?

It's a really good day for it, too. There's quite a convergence of knitting-related awesomeness today. Not only is it Knitlove Wednesday, but today just happens to be the day I hit 1000 posts on the Ravelry message boards and my two-year Ravelry anniversary! I joined back when there was still an invite list and a 2-3 week wait, so I was really excited when I finally got in. So when I posted about hitting 1000 posts, we were joking that it'll be no time at all until I get to 10,000. I mentioned it only took two years, and then checked how long it'd been, just out of curiosity. And there it was. "Raveler since February 3, 2008" Yay me!

In actual knitting news (read: things people other than me might actually care about), my Kaleidoscope sweater is coming along.

I did my very first provisional cast-on for the sleeves the other day (or at least my first successful provisional cast-on. There have been several failed attempts), and I'm nearing the end of the yoke. I think I'll do one more round of decreases, since I don't want it to be quite as off-the-shoulder as the original design, and then I'll move on to the sleeves and the button band! I oughta start looking for buttons soon, too. Mom will be in town this weekend. I bet she'd be happy to help me look. Maybe she'll even give me some of hers. Maybe. She's got a button obsession that has yielded buckets and buckets (literally) of buttons.

Since I'm nearing the end of the sweater (sort of), and I've never been a monogamous knitter, I've been thinking about other things to cast on. I was planning to cast on a washcloth or two, until I remembered that my one ball of kitchen cotton was used for packing material in one of the boxes that hasn't made it to Texas yet. Luckily, those are coming with Mom this weekend, so I won't have to wait much longer. I'm thinking I'll do EXFOLIATE!, in honor of my recently developed crush on David Tennant, thanks to the posting of many, many Hamlet and Doctor Who videos, not to mention the scads of photos. He's on my desktop now, too. I'm also planning to knit a Skully dishcloth, too, since I have a whole ball of the stuff, and I don't know what else to do with it. I haven't been bitten by the dishcloth bug yet, and I'm not yet convinced I will, so we'll see how it goes.

Those won't take long, though, so I'm thinking I'll cast on a lace shawl after that. It'll be my first! I haven't decided which yet, but it'll probably be the Haruni shawl, in some Pagewood Farms sock yarn I got in Las Cruces this summer.

So that's all the knitting news from me on this, the second anniversary of my Raveling adventures. I think I'll go knit on my sweater now.

January 27, 2010

Stockinette and swatches

It seems like ever since we got back to Texas, I've constantly felt like saying, "It's already ____day already?!" Time goes so much faster when you've actually got things to do, even if they're mostly things around the house. And my mind has been going in so many directions that it's almost always a struggle to keep focused on one thing for long.

So I haven't gotten a ton of knitting done this week. The sweater is coming along, but it's just plain, mindless stockinette so far, which makes it even harder to focus for long. So I'll be glad when it's time for sleeves. I should start looking for buttons soon, too.

The other thing I started last night is that I was swatching for something I'm designing myself. I've had this idea in my head for months, and never got around to trying it. So last night I felt like starting something new. Maybe it's all the stockinette, or maybe I've looked at my queue on Ravelry so often that I've gotten bored with it, but I didn't feel like starting anything I'd had planned. So I started something new! Truly new! Very exciting. Maybe by next week I'll have more that just a swatch done. Maybe I'll have pictures of an actual original design!

January 20, 2010

Productiveness! Finally!

Like I said before, it's been a good week for finishing things. I finished the Clandestine socks, but didn't bother to take more pictures of them. I will, but they're done, and I weaved in the ends and everything. I was weaving in ends on all sorts of things. First were the socks. Second was this:

I made a tea mitten! The pattern is from Elisabeth Kleven of Knits Vehemently, and I love how it turned out. It is a little silly that I made a tea cozy for the pot that I can't currently use, as I don't have a tea strainer that fits through the top. But I'll get one soon, since I need to order more loose tea anyway. I'm totally out of my favorite tea, from Tealuxe! Their caramel creme brulee is delicious. So I'll get a new strainer then. I had one, but I accidentally put it through the garbage disposal. Whoops.

I do have another tea cozy in mind for the pot I actually use these days, but I already had that yarn in my stash, so that's what got knit first. So eventually, I'll get around to knitting useful things again.

In other news of finishing things, I did get this done:

Yay! It's a functioning mug cozy! And I like how it came out. I still have some of that yarn leftover, though, so I'll have to find even more small projects like this. And finally, my most exciting bit of knitting news:

I've started another sweater! It's Sarah Sutherland's Kaleidoscope, done in Three Irish Girls sock yarn. The colorway is called Roisin, and I've been drooling over this yarn for months on end. It took me hours just to pick this yarn out in the first place, and even then I had to call my mom and ask what she thought. It probably won't be the last yarn I buy from them, either. All their colorways are gor-freaking-geous. Gorgeous. So. My little six inches of sweater may not look like much yet, but it will. This is one of those projects where I wish it was done already, because I can't wait to wear it! Yay sweater!

January 13, 2010

Catching up on the knitloviness

Knitlove! And sadly, even in all this time I've had to knit, there's only three things to update. Because I got lazy and didn't get a picture of the fourth one.

That fourth one was Mom's Christmas scarf. The super secret Christmas knitting was Yarn Zombie's Isobel Scarf, done in gorgeous Koigu yarn. It was my first Koigu, and far from my last, I can already tell. But anyway, the scarf was finished in time, and blocked and presented, and Mom loved it! She took off the scarf she was wearing (because my mom loves scarves) and replaced it with this one. So I think it was a hit. Eventually I'll get a picture.

Onto the things I do have pictures of.

The first is this mug cozy:

It's Jenny Raymond's Patty Cozy, or at least it will be one day when I get around to putting on the final touches. I thought it was a cute pattern, and I happened to have leftover Malabrigo and a button, so I made it. Or part of it, anyway. It still needs a loop and the button sewn on. These things would take me about fifteen or twenty minutes, if I would just sit down and do it. But I haven't yet. Meh. I will.

Now! The things I've been spending most of my knitting time on. My very first Cookie A. socks! They're the Clandestine socks, from the fall 2009 Knitty, and I'm loving them. I finished the first one in eleven days. The second one isn't going quite as fast, but I'm ok with that. I'll be glad when they're done, though, and I'm getting close. Two more lace repeats and the toe, a little finishing work, and they're done! They are super pretty, too. And they've been sort of a learning process, in regards to my lace tolerance. I've learned that knitting while listening to a podcast or audiobook seems to work fine, but for whatever reason, I can't knit while watching a movie. Even a movie I've seen a billion times. I tried knitting through "The Princess Bride" the other night, and I screwed up more in that one lace repeat than throughout the rest of these socks. Go figure.

And finally... my Hermione hat. It's actually called Hermione's Cable and Eyelet Hat, from JL Yarnworks' blog. I had this yarn that I had been knitting into mitts, but even though I'd loved the pattern, I wasn't crazy about how mine were coming out. I don't know why, but they just weren't working for me. So after literally a year of waffling and carrying around this UFO (Un-Finished Object, for you non-knitting muggles), I finally made a decision and frogged it, and turned the yarn into this hat. Yay! I love it. It's a little, tiny bit too long, but I love it anyway. I just have to either wear it pushed back on my head, or fold up the brim in front, and the good news is that it looks cute either way!

It just figures that we've already had our cold snap for the year, and it's back up into the sixties, and I probably won't be able to wear it until next year. Whatever. I'll be so cute in my hat next year.

Now I get to figure out what to knit next! It's very exciting.

January 12, 2010

Where has my brain gone? I must have left it in my knitting bag.

I had every intention of doing a knitting update today, but then we went to Best Friend's house, and ended up spending the rest of the day there, and didn't leave until after midnight.

So I was feeling all guilty that I said I was going to get back into blogging more regularly again.

And then I realized today was Tuesday. I am aware it's after midnight, so it's technically Wednesday already, but I haven't been to bed yet, so it still feels like Tuesday. And Wednesdays are when I was doing the knitting posts. So I'm not late at all. There will be a knitting update tomorrow (aka, later today).

Good night.

Turkey turkey turkey

Wanna know what I'm thankful for?

Hand-knitted socks.

I started decreasing for the toe while we waited for the THREE turkeys to finish cooking (Seriously. They're not kidding when they say everything's bigger in Texas), and I finished and grafted the toe while fending off my second turkey coma of the week.

It's been a pretty good week.

November 19, 2009

Knitting update

Another week has gone by, and a lot of knitting has happened. I'm nearly done with the first of three balls of yarn on the super secret Christmas gift project, so it's coming along well. Especially considering it was only a week ago that I had to start over. So thank goodness for that.

The sock is coming along. I turned the heel yesterday, and I'm through the decreases and now I'm just knitting the foot. See?

I'm having a few annoying little doubts about the heel. I think it may be a little too big, but I couldn't decide. So I'm still waffling about whether I want to rip back and redo it or not. I can definitely say that I like the flap heel better than this one. It just feels sturdier to me, like it'll last longer. But then I've never worn hand-knit socks, so I don't have any frame of reference for how well they'll hold up. Other than those little hesitations, it's going well.

There is one other little bit of news. Remember this sweater?

The sweater that I finished back in July? Well, confession: I hadn't actually, entirely finished finished it. I just finished the knitting. But it's cool enough now to wear a sweater, so I decided I want to wear it to the big Thanksgiving dinner we're having this Saturday, with the whole family. So I sat down yesterday to weave in all the ends- and there were a lot of them. So it's actually finished now. Hooray! Finally.
